Update on Geological Materials Storage Facility
The Northwest Territories Geological Survey (NTGS) has begun the process of moving its collection of mineral industry drill core to the new Geological Materials Storage Facility located at 140 Bristol Avenue, Yellowknife. This airport facility consists of an unheated warehouse for storage of drill core and other geological materials, and an adjacent heated space where core and other geological samples can be examined.
For many years, the collection of exploration drill core from across the territory has been stored on wooden pallets at the Giant Mine site. As the ground thaws, these pallets can be safely lifted onto flatbed trailers for the 6.5 km journey to their new home. Once there, the pallets will be stored on purpose-built shelving. A specialised forklift will be used to retrieve pallets so that drill core can be accessed for viewing and other purposes.
During this commissioning phase, the facility will not be open to the public. However, please contact Scott Cairns or Barrett Elliott at the NTGS if there are core intervals or rock samples you wish to view. We may be able to help. The public opening of the facility will occur later during the summer of 2017.
